Dyslexia is largely misunderstood. Today most people think of Dyslexia as being a reading problem associated with letter reversals and or word omissions. At one time it was considered a brain malfunction or disability. Dyslexia encompasses a much larger umbrella of learning difficulties. At Ladera Reading Solutions we consider a person's Dyslexia the starting point of the learning abilities. Their "Gift", as referred to in the Gift of Dyslexia, by Ronald. D. Davis.
There are many labels today describing learning difficulties. ADD (attention deficit disorder), ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), LD (learning disability), and APD (auditory processing disorder) are a few of the more popular labels being thrown around in the educational environment. Many believe these are separate and unrelated in any way. Surprisingly they all have a common thread of disorientation and distorted mental perceptions.
Disorientation can happen quickly. So quickly, an individual can be unaware it is happening. Unconsciously, this learner, a visual spatial, picture thinking learner, has turned on an alternate thinking style to try and resolve what is confusing them. Unfortunately this thinking style or recognition process doesn't always work when reading words or symbols. It creates more confusion, resulting in mental distortion or disorientation of three dimensional pictures sometimes looking like these below. Just imagine what happens when the visual spatial, picture thinker is reading and encounters a word that has NO picture.
house big hill The text should read : "There is a house on a big hill."
Feeling a little queasy? Letters moving and seeing images within them is a classic trait of dyslexia.
Ladera Reading Solutions for Dyslexia offers the Davis Dyslexia Correction® Program. Davis Orientation Counseling and Symbol Mastery are used alongside basic Davis techniques, typically working together 30 hours, one-on-one, over a 5-day period. Before starting the program, a consultation along with the Perceptual Ability Assessment, help determine whether the client has the positive mental talents associated with dyslexia. Together we will develop a profile encouraging their strengths and addressing areas of academic weaknesses which need to be remedied.
For example, as well as addressing the reading difficulties, the client may want to focus on problems associated with spelling: with a newly discovered ability of being able to control what was once out of control, the client will use his talent as an aid in helping him master areas that were once very confusing. Upon completion of the basic program, clients have a full understanding of all the Davis methods, and know how to continue to use these methods on their own. For more information scroll down.
Davis Orientation Counseling® teaches dyslexic students how to recognize and control the mental state that leads to distorted and confused perceptions of letters, words and numerals. Through a simple mental technique, the students learn to turn off the thought processes that cause misperceptions. Instead, they are able to restore their minds to a relaxed and focused state, suitable for reading and other studies. Once Orientation is learned, the student is ready to build the conceptual skills that will allow them to overcome problems stemming from dyslexia.
Davis Symbol Mastery® gives dyslexic students the ability to think with symbols and words, so they can learn to read easily and with full comprehension. Using clay, students first work with the alphabet, numerals, and punctuation marks, to make sure that they have an accurate perception and understanding of these symbols. Students then use clay to model the trigger words -- the short abstract words, frequently encountered in reading, such as and, the, to, or it.
These words cause problems when dyslexic students cannot form a mental picture to go along with them. Through Symbol Mastery, the student makes a three-dimensional clay model of the meaning of each word, together with a model of the letters of the words. With this approach, learning is permanent
